Adult Services

“When I was looking for some relief because of a personal tragedy, I was referred to the Wendt Center. I was fortunate enough to find a therapist who matched me like a glove. He is the perfect guide to help me move from an overwhelming place of grief and stagnation. He asks the right questions which resonate inside of me so I can be part of the healing process. It’s not that he’ll cure me, but he helps me deal with my own experience. I trust him completely.”

— Wendt Center Client

Our professional, experienced counselors work with adults individually and in support groups. We offer counseling in two ways: remotely through secure, private video conferencing; and in-person at our main office in Northwest Washington, DC.

Adult Grief & Trauma Counseling

Illness, death, loss and trauma impact all of us, no matter how strong or capable we may be. While many people manage painful circumstances with the support of trusted family, friends and clergy, many others benefit from professional help. Counseling can be especially beneficial to those experiencing complicated grief reactions resulting from multiple losses or difficult relationships, the stress of a long-term illness, the overwhelming feelings after a sudden or traumatic death of a loved one, or the pain of coping with a traumatic event or circumstances. Counseling is often about finding new solutions to problems of living, or navigating changed relationships after a loss or traumatic event. Our trained, experienced therapists accompany adults and families as they readjust to a world that has drastically changed because of death and/or trauma.

Grief and trauma counseling is our specialty. We have learned and benefited from decades of experience working with adults, children, teens and families facing many different situations of illness, trauma and grief. Our therapists are not afraid to witness pain — many of our lives have been touched by it — and we know that we cannot “take it away” or “fix it.” But, we can provide a safe, confidential place to travel this often painful journey.

We understand. Persons living with grief and loss may feel despair, have difficulty concentrating or accomplishing the simplest tasks, or feel as if they are “going crazy.” It is common for physical problems to occur. Each person’s experience is totally unique. Even people in the same family, grieving for the same loved one, or coping with the same event, have different reactions. Our wealth of experience strengthens our ability to guide individuals through difficult times and toward healing.

We offer a variety of services to meet the needs of our community, including individual, couple, family and group counseling. Daytime and evening appointments are available. Every effort is made to find the therapist most suited to the client’s needs. As it is difficult to project how long counseling will take, services are available for as long as an individual or a family needs.
