Clinicians-in-Training

Are you interested in low-cost therapy services?

Are you excited by the idea of helping to shape the careers of grief and trauma therapists?

Lucky for you, we offer several options for lower cost therapy with a Clinician-in-Training.

Below is some information that might help you decide what option is right for you.

Interns

A clinical intern is a current graduate student in the final year of their training program to become a licensed mental health professional. At the Wendt Center, all of our interns have had at least one prior internship, and come highly recommended by their prior site, employers, and the staff at their universities.

Every year we have a batch of interns start in August and finish in May. As part of their internship, each week (in addition to their classes!) they participate in trainings, supervision with a fully licensed clinician, consultation with peers and other licensed clinicians, and provide support for community-based services and our office-based and virtual groups. These interns typically have 3-8 individual clients at any one time, meaning all of that training and supervision they receive will directly benefit you.

If you start your services with an intern but feel you need to continue past when their internship ends, we will do our best to match you with a new clinician or clinician-in-training as soon as possible. Best of all, you’re able to provide feedback directly to their supervisor or the Clinical Director throughout services, and we can use that feedback to help them learn how to better serve every future client. Every therapist was an intern at one point, and we could not be more honored and grateful for the clients we saw during those formative experiences.

As of 1/1/2025, the cost to see an intern for an individual session, regardless of length, is $50.

Need more convincing?

Associates

An associate is a currently licensed clinician who is seeing clients at the Wendt Center to help hone their skills as grief and trauma therapists. These associates have a wide range of past experiences and most have an additional job in the mental health field – as a school counselor, a play-therapist, a hospital social worker, you name it! They are able to attend all of the same trainings that our full-time staff have access to, as well as the trainings the interns attend. Plus, they are supervised by an experienced, fully licensed Wendt Center clinician.

These associates are incredible professionals who want the experience of working with you, so they can feel more confident in their ability to companion someone through their grief and trauma journey.

Our associates don’t have a fixed term with us, so they might be a great option if you’re looking to start reduced-cost services in the Spring or Summer when an intern isn’t an option.

As of 1/1/2025, the cost to see an associate for an individual session, regardless of length, is $50.

Fellows

At the Wendt Center, fellows are full time employees who have a graduate level degree and license, but are not yet able to practice independently. They have a reduced caseload to allow them extra time to meet with supervisors, attend trainings, and engage in peer consultation with each other. These fellows have already completed clinical internships during their graduate school programs, and have had robust coursework to prepare them in the latest techniques and theories.

Our Fellows then applied to and were selected for our program because they have all the qualities we’re looking for in fully licensed Wendt Center clinicians. In their first year they see individual clients, support our community based programs, and co-facilitate group therapy services. By their second year, they may even be facilitating groups independently.

Fellows stay in the program for two years, so are another fantastic option if you’re hoping to start services off-cycle from when our interns are accepting clients.

As of 1/1/2025, the cost to see an associate for an individual session, regardless of length, is $100.
