About the Position

The Wendt Center seeks an empathetic, collaborative, and inclusive Executive Director to build on 50 years of impact helping people rebuild a sense of safety and hope after experiencing a loss, life-threatening illness, violence or other trauma. The new Executive Director will bring a deep sense of commitment to the Wendt Center philosophy and mission and will provide a caring and compassionate environment to inspire hope and healing in the Washington, DC Metro community. Reporting to the Board of Directors, managing three direct reports, and overseeing a dedicated clinical and program staff of 30, the new leader will oversee the delivery of services, fundraising, administration, financial management, and public relations. 

The ideal candidate has an ethos of connectedness, a record of leadership rooted in performance and accountability, and a focus on building trust with staff, the Board, key partners, and individuals and families across the Metropolitan DC area who rely on the Wendt Center.  In addition, the strongest candidates will bring a successful track record leading teams in a values-based nonprofit organization.

Key Responsibilities
Team Management
  • Foster a collaborative culture of genuine teamwork, unity, respect, and common purpose among all staff
  • Lead and support a team of 3 senior leaders by facilitating regular meetings, ensuring effective ongoing communication, and organizing opportunities to foster team alignment and organizational growth
  • Engage, empower, inspire, and hold staff accountable to fulfill their responsibilities and create a culture of performance and accountability across the organization
  • Facilitate collaboration across departments, functions, and tenures, and strengthen internal communications to cultivate strong, trusting working relationships at every level
  • Lead staff engagement and professional development while ensuring a strong, engaged, and well-supported staff
Fiscal Operations
  • In collaboration with the Finance Director, oversee the development and implementation of the annual budget 
  • Provide oversight of the annual audit each year in partnership with the Finance Committee of the Board
  • Partner with the Board of Directors finance and audit subcommittees to ensure the organization is operating with efficiency and fiscal integrity
  • Oversee financial policies and procedures 
  • Encourage organization-wide ownership of the financial vision and value proposition.
Culture and Values
  • Model and animate Wendt values, centering compassion, collaboration, teamwork, curiosity, and empathy in all interactions
  • Facilitate unity and positive, collaborative, respectful communication among and between staff, board, and partners
  • Practice deep listening and humility and foster an environment of openness, safety, understanding, and patience
  • Co-create, implement, and uphold decision making processes that center staff voice and input and build reasonable timelines to ensure staff voice is taken into account in key decisions

Fundraising
  • Ensure the Wendt Center has the revenue required to fulfill its mission, grow and innovate
  • Develop and implement a fundraising strategy, which includes specific revenue targets for government and foundation grants as well as corporate and individual donors, to enable the organization to secure the financial resources necessary to advance and fulfill its mission
  • Identify and cultivate new donors and strengthen relationships with current donors
  • Oversee the Development Director and Board Level Development subcommittee to organize and carry out all fundraising efforts including, but not limited to, individual donors, private and corporate foundations and organizations, state and federal funders, and the Combined Federal Campaign and United Way
Program and Administration
  • Update, develop, and oversee implementation of organization’s strategic plan to ensure the effectiveness of the organization’s mission and its long-term sustainability
  • Direct development and implementation of programs to address gaps within the service delivery system and ensure accessibility
  • Ensure all programs deliver effective, efficient, and high-quality service through thoughtful program evaluation 
  • Ensure compliance with all private and government grant requirements and deliverables
  • Ensure organizational compliance with all relevant local and federal regulations including but not limited to ensuring adequate coverage of all business insurance policies 
Public Relations
  • Promote the visibility of the Wendt Center by serving as its primary spokesperson and communicating regularly and with transparency through means such as regular impact reports, an annual report, public events, traditional media outlets, newsletter, and social media
  • Ensure representation of the Wendt Center and its mission at the local and national level in the grief and loss community through collaborative public presentations, special events, publications, training, and other opportunities including service on relevant community and government-based committees and coalitions
  • Serve on relevant community and government-based committees to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the resources and needs within the broader mental health/grief/trauma service delivery system locally and nationally
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with other leaders in the grief and loss community, with business, civic, and community leaders, and with current, former, and prospective donors and clients of the Center
Board Development
  • Partner with the Board of Directors and its subcommittees to ensure effective implementation of the organization’s strategic plan
  • In collaboration with the leadership team and staff, recommend appropriate actions and policy decisions for consideration by the Board
  • Report to the Board on program implementation, financial status, infrastructure changes, and organizational health
  • Other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors
Qualifications

Compensation and Benefits

Salary range is $170,000-$200,000 annually commensurate with experience; benefits include paid holidays, vacation and sick time, flexible schedule, 403b, health and dental insurance, life insurance, and parking.

About the Position

The Wendt Center is seeking an experienced, proactive, people-centered Director of Development to lead its development strategy, cultivate donor engagement, and build strong systems for the effective operations of a dedicated Development team. As a key member of the senior leadership team, the Director of Development will work in partnership with the Executive Director to ensure the Wendt Center’s long-term financial sustainability and uphold its commitment to community.

Please note: The Wendt Center operates on an October 1 – September 30 fiscal year, with an annual budget of $5M. Our three primary revenue types are: government and foundation grants (accounting for approx. 60 – 70%); annual Benefit Gala ticket sales and donations (10 – 15%); and counseling fees (10 – 15%). The Development Team of three includes: Manager, Institutional Giving, Development Operations Associate, and Volunteer Coordinator (PT). We feel confident in being able to maintain existing funding, with the goal of expanding our individual donor/major donor base and identifying new corporate and foundation partnership opportunities.

Key Responsibilities
    Development Strategy, Planning & Execution
    • Serve as a key member of the senior leadership team, partnering with the Executive Director in developing a data-informed, pipeline-driven annual budget with revenue goals aligned with mission, organizational growth needs, and staff capacity.
    • In collaboration with the Executive Director and Development team, create and implement a comprehensive development program and fundraising initiatives to proactively engage existing supporters and cultivate new funder prospects (with focus on corporate and partners and individual donors/major gifts) to meet $6M revenue goal, with year over year growth.
    • Work in close partnership with the Clinical Services team to understand program services and align with fundraising goals, activities, and communications.
    • Work with finance to monitor budget, provide regular reporting on fundraising progress toward goals, and adjust fundraising plans and expectations as needed.
    • Serve as the staff lead for the Development Committee of the Board of Directors, providing development presentations and reports to the Board, identify optimal opportunities to engage and support the Board in targeted fundraising initiatives.
    • Serve as a staff lead and visible relationship-builder for the Center’s annual Benefit/Gala, which provides an important opportunity for our community to come together, and supports general operating expenses. Maintain knowledge of current and emerging fundraising trends and sector best practices.
    • Ensure Wendt’s fundraising efforts and operations work together to demonstrate our mission and clearly tell the story of our impact.
    Development Operations
    • Assess donor database for effectiveness; identify opportunities to best leverage existing fundraising software and tools.
    • Create systems, processes, and structures that enable Development team members to effectively track, monitor, and grow funder portfolio and pipeline.
    • Establish protocols and templates to support staff capacity and replicable /scalable fundraising activities.
    • Establish policies and procedures to reinforce equitable and consistent fundraising practices.
    • Ensure maintenance of clean donor data, donation receipts and acknowledgments, and grant management materials for strong record-keeping and support of the organization’s annual audit.
    Team Management
    • Represent the Wendt Center’s values of kindness, collaboration, and practice as a life-long learner.
    • Build authentic relationships with others in an inclusive environment based on aligned values, mutual trust and respect.
    • Actively lead and engage Development team by providing a clear vision, shared expectations, transparent communication, mentorship/coaching, culture building, and psychological safety.
    • Regularly evaluate staff capacity identify hiring and professional development needs.
    Qualifications
    • A deep commitment to Wendt Center’s mission
    • 7+ years nonprofit development/fundraising experience; demonstrated success in individual/major gifts and corporate donor cultivation a plus
    • 3+ years supervisory experience
    • Strong management and leadership skills, both strategic and operational, with a results orientation and ability to foster inclusive environments across diverse communities, and motivate a team of staff, consultants, and volunteers
    • Excellent relationship building skills, with comfort and interest in engaging with external stakeholders
    • Excellent communications skills with an ability to effectively listen and influence.
    • Proven ability to cultivate and steward charitable contributions and other funding at the $5,000+ and six-figure level
    • A commitment to professional ethics in working with confidential, sensitive information
    • Experience managing pipelines and donor management systems; experience with Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge a plus
    • Experience with fundraising event management a plus

    Part-Time Child and Teen Grief and Trauma Psychotherapist (active DC LICSW or LPC only)

    • Compensation: $55 per session held

    • Role Type: Part time. Paid per session, with some option for paid administrative time
    • Reports to: Clinical Director
    • Degree: Graduate level degree in mental health required
    • License: Must have and maintain an independent District of Columbia mental health license (LICSW or LPC only) and be eligible to acquire Virginia and Maryland licensure
    • Experience: 2 years of experience treating children and teens at the independent clinical level

    About the Position

    Join our team of mental health professionals who combine their expertise in grief and trauma with their passion for providing high quality services to all. The Wendt Center offers a hybrid work environment, ongoing CE trainings and professional development, peer support and supervision to support its commitment to our highly valued therapists.

    You would provide psychotherapy to diverse child and teen clients who have experienced a death related loss or traumatic event. Children aged 5-8 are seen in our offices, and children 9-18 have the option to engage in teletherapy or office visits, depending on the assessment of the therapist.

    Key Responsibilities
    • Works between 7-15 hours per week and sees between 6 and 13 clients as assigned (schedule is flexible)
    • Provides individual grief and trauma counseling services to children and teens
    • Provides in-person services at least one day per week at our office
    • Provides therapy services between 4 and 8pm or teletherapy services on weekends
    • Completes a clinical assessment, treatment plan, and diagnosis within a week of a client’s initial session
    • Maintains current clinical case records and provides reports as needed, completes notes, updates, etc. according to agency standards and timelines
    • Maintains therapy rooms and materials to professional standards
    • Contacts collateral professionals and others in the community regarding cases when appropriate
    • Meets with supervisor regarding caseload and clinical and aministrative concerns when appropriate
    • Maintains updated, current client schedule via online EHR system
    • Provides caseload information to Director and other colleagues for statistical, program, and grant development purposes
    • Completes online insurance panel credentialing process in a timely manner according to provided instructions
    • Uses email regularly to remain informed of Wendt Center business
      Qualifications
      • Graduate level degree in mental health
      • MUST have and maintain an independent District of Columbia mental health license (LICSW or LPC only) and be eligible to acquire Virginia and Maryland licensure
      • Minimum of 2 years of experience providing individual therapy to children and teens at the Independent Clinical level
      • Proven professional background working in trauma, grief, and loss
      • Must have ability to provide teletherapy services from home in a confidential space, or come to the office to provide them
      Compensation and Benefits

      Competitive salary of $55.00 per session held. Also compensated for administrative time (documentation and meetings attended) at $18.00/hour. Eligible for professional development stipend, state license renewal fees, and free continuing education training within the center (with CEs awarded).

      Clinical Fellowship Program

      The Wendt Center offers a comprehensive paid two-year Fellowship program. This training program provides specialized training and supervision to new MA or MSW graduates interested in increasing their knowledge and skills of grief- and trauma-focused psychotherapy. Fellows will obtain advanced competencies and core expertise and skills beyond those attained through completion of a master’s degree program. Fellows follow a comprehensive curriculum of theory, skill development, and practice related to grief and trauma services.
